How many hours will it stay cool ?
With icepacks, it will stay 12 hours cool. Without icepacks, it will stay 6 hours cool.

Will the cooler compartment hold its shape if it is empty or will it collapse with items in the top compartment?
It will collapse. What I do is to keep empty food containers inside the whole time.

Will this work for college and i can return if it breaks
As long as you don’t have the need to carry too many books then yes. It has a laptop compartment in the back that also has some additional full-length storage to accompany the padded laptop section, however, this is the only full length compartment on the bag as the rest of the compartments are directly over the food storage.
